When and How to Buy an Engagement Ring
The engagement ring, usually a diamond, is the visible sign of your commitment to each other. You can slip one on her finger after she’s given you the nod at the proposal, or you can wait a few months while the two of you shop together for a style and size she adores. If you want the whole world to know this little fox is taken, though, it’s best to get the ring on her finger no later than two to three months after the proposal. Once you do, everyone, even her irascible grandmother who thinks you’re a worthless bum, will take you more seriously.
Take your time to shop and don’t fall for pitches that are out of your price range. Be sensible about this and set the tone for the rest of the engagement. You can get your little darling a gorgeous, drop-dead diamond ring without dropping a bundle, so don’t rush and don’t let store clerks push you or the two of you until you’re sure about the purchase. Diamond rings have a huge and thriving after market and you can find some doozies at estate sales for less than retail.
